Britain awash with abandoned appliances

Kitchens cupboards in Britain contain £2.6 billion worth of gadgets that are completely unused, new research by Halifax Home Insurance suggests.
A study by the financial services provider indicates that sandwich toasters are the appliance most likely to be abandoned, with nearly a third (32 per cent) of households having one.
It is followed by blenders (21 per cent) and lean, mean grilling machines (17 per cent).

People in the south-east have wasted the most cash on unused items, spending an average of £119 on gadgets that remain languishing in cupboards.
David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, states that British kitchens are becoming "graveyards" of unused technology.
"Britons should ensure they always read the instructions before firing up a blow torch or electric carving knife as they could cause extensive damage to their property and potentially injure the user," he adds.
Meanwhile, recent research by Churchill Home Insurance suggests that kitchen apparatus are among the ten most likely items to be stolen by thieves.
