Customers should use credit cards to protect online payments

21 August 2008

Customers should use credit cards to protect online paymentsConsumers that pay online for tickets should use credit cards to protect themselves from being scammed by ticket touts.

A spokesperson from the Trading Standards Institute pointed out that if people pay by debit card online they wouldn't get their money back should something go wrong but credit card companies may allow you to claim back money lost.

Recently, thousands of people were scammed by ticket tout website beijingtickets.com which was selling fake tickets to the Olympics, a scam which is thought to have pocketed the owners of the site almost £5 million.

Under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1975 customers can claim back money lost on transactions of between £100 and £30,000 on a credit card.

If people pay for tickets online and they do not arrive, as was a problem for some at last weekend's V festival, then customers can also claim the money back from their bank.
