No escape for uninsured drivers
12 September 2008
The British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) has revealed the proposed way in which motorists are to be checked to ensure they have suitable insurance.
According to the industry organisation, two databases of drivers are to be maintained.
One of these is the conventional vehicle licensing register already in place with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.
The other is to be a list of car insurance policyholders in the UK, allowing enforcement officials to see who has a policy in place.
By comparing the two, BIBA Technical and Corporate Affairs Executive Graeme Trudgill asserts that any discrepancies may be revealed.
"It will probably be about two years before this will actually be working, but it is going to be working," he comments.
Drivers might wish to ensure they have comprehensive car insurance in place before the introduction of the new scheme.
Mr Trudgill adds that the move comes as part of a renewed commitment from the government to work with industry bodies in tackling the level of uninsured drivers on the nation's roads.
