New Abbey essentials credit card on offer

03 November 2008

New Abbey essentials credit card on offerThose trying to tighten their financial belts and cut back on household costs could benefit from a new card from Abbey National, it has been suggested.

Abbey's new card will offer users three per cent cashback on household essentials such as petrol and groceries and zero per cent on balance transfers for nine months, as well as zero per cent on purchases for three months.

Michelle Slade, from Moneyfacts, said that the rise of food and fuel has been hitting customers hard, but it was difficult to alleviate these problems as both were essential.

She said: "By offering cashback on these essentials, Abbey is refunding part of this increase back to customers, which will make the increased costs easier to bear."

Sean Gardner, of MoneyExpert.com, said that customers looking for a lower APR might want to look somewhere other than the Abbey card but it "could be the answer" for those who clock up a lot of miles or "tend to put the monthly grocery shop on the credit card".
