Heating cost savings made by pensioners

11 November 2008

Heating cost savings made by pensionersA survey has claimed that more than 4.5 million elderly people in the UK will try and save money this winter by heating only one room in their home, it has been reported.

Of the 1,263 elderly adults surveyed by the British Gas Help the Aged Partnership, one in four said they would keep warm by getting into bed, according to figures cited by the BBC.

One in four older people is suffering from fuel poverty, according to the partnership, which means they are spending more than ten per cent of their disposable income on heating their homes.

The British Gas Help the Aged Partnership provides the elderly with tips on cost cutting and keeping warm as well as advising on whether they are eligible for free home insulation.

Kate Jopling, Help the Aged's Head of Public Affairs, told the BBC: "Every single day the situation gets worse. The government measures do not match the scale of the problem."
