More than a quarter of caravans not insured
19 July 2007
Over a quarter of caravan owners will take to the road without insurance this summer, research by the insurer Towergate has found.
Unlike motor insurance, caravan insurance is not compulsory.
However, the 28 per cent who opt not to protect their vehicles may live to regret their decision.
One in ten caravan owners have made a claim in the last three years, mostly for accidental damage.
Towergate's study revealed that the main reason given for not taking out insurance was the low value of the caravan followed by the fact that it is only used occasionally.
Dave Sheath, managing director of Towergate, said: "We were alarmed to see from our research how many people were not taking out insurance.
"Not only can some of the top of the range caravans set you back well over £20,000 if they are stolen, the damage you can cause to third parties can be enormous."
He urged caravanners to be "responsible" and invest in insurance.
